Long-term vision

Green Mine project brings the coal site back to people and nature

About the project

Our goal is to return the former coal site to future generations in better condition than when the mining took it over.

In connection with Europe’s transition from conventional coal-based energy to renewable energy, Sev.en Česká energie Group is preparing an integrated project for the ČSA surface mine, the main objectives of which include:

Energy use through the construction of an energy park, including, among other things, a complex of floating, land-based and other types of photovoltaic power plants, a pumped-hydro storage power station, and the connected production of hydrogen and a storage system;

Economic and social use of the area including, among other things, the development of zero-carbon residential areas featuring the  opportunity to develop a specifically profiled hi-tech industrial zone, including additional related activities;

Environmental and socio-cultural use of the area, including landscaping activities.

BIRD’S EYE VIEW OF THE PROJECT

Dear visitor, we want to introduce you vision of The Komořany Lake in the version for the 21st century

Concept

Even the Longest Journey Begins with a Single Step

Group Sev.en Česká energie has developed a long-term, comprehensive vision that goes beyond the strategic project Green Mine, supported by the Just Transition Operational Programme. The aim is to transform the former ČSA mining site into a modern region featuring innovative industrial zones, SMART residential communities, new entrepreneurial activities, and a revitalized landscape where nature has space to thrive.

The reimagined landscape and diversified economy will reshape the region into a vibrant, desirable place for future generations

The areas affected by mining offer a unique opportunity to establish a modern energy park combining renewable energy production, energy storage, and green hydrogen production—all within a zero-emissions framework. Another path to clean energy involves the cultivation and energy use of biomass.

The new landscape and restructured economy will make the region an attractive place to live. Modern housing, recreation, and leisure opportunities will become an integral part of the transformation. The plan envisions the development of new, energy self-sufficient settlements, utilizing SMART solutions connected to local renewable energy sources (RES).

The Beating Heart of the Territory

Nové Komořany

Nové Komořany will serve as the beating heart of the region, combining the development of urban settlements, research and innovation initiatives, and industry. The area of the ČSA mine has undergone a turbulent transformation over the past 100 years. It was completely reshaped by open-pit mining, which, in the past, even forced entire villages to make way for extraction.

An energy self-sufficient settlement with SMART technology applications

As part of the revitalization and resocialization of the ČSA mine, a SMART residential zone named Nové Komořany will rise at its heart, near the shores of a future lake. The area will be bordered by the flow of the river Bílina. Group Sev.en Česká energie aims to develop an energy self-sufficient settlement, applying SMART technologies connected to local RES. New job opportunities will be created across a variety of emerging industrial sectors. The area will also support research and development activities focused on sustainable energy production. A key feature of the initiative will be attractive, modern housing.

Photovoltaics in Many Forms

PHOTOVOLTAIC POWER PLANTS

Photovoltaic power plants are an integral part of the Green Mine long-term vision, contributing significantly to increasing the share of renewable energy sources in electricity production across the Czech Republic—and playing a major role in the national transition towards greener energy.

Photovoltaics within the initiative take on many forms

Photovoltaics within the initiative take on many forms. Plans include classic stationary “field” solar power plants, rooftop panels that help reduce the energy demands of buildings, floating photovoltaic systems installed on pontoons on the surface of the future lake, and even agrivoltaics—combining solar energy production with crop cultivation and livestock farming under the solar arrays.

Hydrogen Technology as a Modern Energy Medium

HYDROGEN

Hydrogen is a zero-emission energy carrier and a fuel of the future—enabling energy storage with applications across industry and transportation. The plan focuses on the production of green hydrogen using electricity generated from renewable energy sources.

Only green electricity, water, and electrolyser are needed to produce green hydrogen

Green Mine envisions green hydrogen production within a hydrogen facility located at the site of the former underground lignite mine Centrum.

The facility will include electrolyzers, storage tanks, a compression system for hydrogen storage, and supporting water management infrastructure. Green hydrogen produced at the Centrum site will be available for use in chemical and agrochemical industries, as well as for hydrogen-powered transport, including buses and passenger vehicles.

Modern Research and Industry for the 21st Century

SMART R&I and INDUSTRY

Group Sev.en Česká energie's ambition is to develop an energy self-sufficient settlement that integrates SMART solutions connected to local RES. The plan´s realization will create job opportunities across a variety of emerging industrial sectors, with a particular focus on Climate Tech—technologies that mitigate the impacts of climate change. Research and development activities will be prioritized in the fields of renewable energy, energy storage, and circular material use, including the recycling and reuse of by-products generated during coal-based electricity and heat production.

Science, research, development, and innovation are among the key investments in the future of the entire region. The field of research and development, technological advancement, and innovation is crucial for ensuring regional competitiveness—something Group Sev.en Česká energie is committed to supporting.

Recreation as an Essential Part of an Ideal Place to Live

RELAXATION AND LEISURE

The reshaped landscape will turn the region into an attractive place to live. Recreation and leisure opportunities will naturally become an integral part of the transformation. Unique biotopes emerging through reclamation and natural succession will offer ideal settings for suburban recreation—inviting visitors to enjoy walks through a landscape that continuously evolves and changes. The visually striking environment will be best appreciated from a lookout tower designed to reflect the mining heritage of the entire region.

The area around the lake will offer a network of cycling routes connected to regional cycle paths.

The entire landscape—including reclamation zones, areas of natural succession, and the lake itself—will provide an ideal setting for observing natural processes, flora, and fauna.

Succession: An Ideal Way to Return the Land to Nature

LANDSCAPE CARE

Areas affected by mining present an ideal opportunity for nature-driven landscape development through the process of natural succession. Across the extensive territory, unique and valuable biotopes with high biodiversity and strong ecosystem dynamics will emerge. Approximately 60–80% of the designated area is suitable for natural ecosystem development and ecological restoration through succession.

Part of natural succession is also the lake itself, in which water accumulates spontaneously. On the succession areas, diverse littoral vegetation will sprout in the shallows, and the shores will be populated with undemanding, adaptable plant species, initially annuals and then also herbs, grasses, shrubs, and trees. Rich communities of fauna depend on such a varied environment. Thanks to the inhospitable conditions, these are often very rare species that do not have a chance to survive in the normal landscape in competition with stronger common species.

Spontaneous natural landscape regeneration will also offer a unique experience for visitors, providing ever-changing, colorful scenery that invites repeated visits, each offering a new perspective.
